Satellite activity

The nighttime light signature is a proxy for activity and infrastructure: where there is sustained operation, there is light the satellite sees every night. This layer places critical facilities and the large power plants over the real VIIRS night composite, the NASA sensor that records the day-night band, served as open tiles. It is the principle actividad.podeley.ar applies to track drilling in Vaca Muerta, here carried to the country's whole energy infrastructure.

What looking at night adds

A node map says where things are; the satellite says which ones are operating and how intensely, without asking anyone. The map shows the contrast: the thermal plants around Buenos Aires and the refineries along the La Plata axis fall on the bright metropolitan patch, while the Añelo hub appears as a constellation of points deep in the Neuquén desert, the signature of flaring and field activity where no city explains it. For an attack-surface analysis, that light is the independent confirmation that a facility is a live asset, not a row in an outdated database.

An attacker doing reconnaissance crosses sources: if a register says a plant exists and the satellite shows it lit, the facility goes from data to confirmed target. That cross, which used to take fieldwork, now happens in a browser. Putting it on the defender's side is the point: what the attacker correlates for free, the operator has to assume is already correlated.

Limits of this layer

  • Absence of light does not imply absence of infrastructure. A pipeline, a transmission corridor, or an unattended station emits no light and does not appear. The layer lights up what shines, not what exists.
  • The Black Marble composite is an annual reference, not last night's image. It reads sustained presence, not events.
  • Night light mixes energy activity with urban lighting. Separating one from the other requires the per-pixel radiance processing of actividad.podeley.ar, which is not redone here.
